Set in the Grand Tetons in the 1950's, this gripping rustic drama revolves around Clay Spencer (Henry Fonda), a fiercely independent, industrious farmer who loves his wife Olivia (Maureen O'Hara) and his nine kids so much that he is ready to sacrifice anything for the sake of his large family. By working hard, he scraped together enough money to build his constantly growing family a new beautiful house on the plot of land he had inherited on Spencer's Mountain. However, he is forced to put his plan on hold in order to allow his eldest son, Clayboy (James MacArthur), to go to college.
