Inspired by true events, the drama follows the adventures of Clifford Irving (Richard Gere), a struggling American novelist in the 1970s who couldn't sell his books. Wanting to make a name for himself, Irving decided to resort to a ruse about writing an "autobiography" of Howard Hughes (Milton Buras), one of the most famous and wealthiest people in the world. After enlisting the help of his pal Richard Suskind (Alfred Molina), Irving attempted to compose the fake memoirs.
