Shortly before the playoffs, the Washington Sentinels and their cheerleaders have gone on strike for more money. To put their nose out, the owner of the NFL football team, Edward O'Neil (Jack Warden), brings in self-retired head coach Jimmy McGinty (Gene Hackman) to hire a team of substitute players.
